LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - A Pakistani court on Friday ordered the release next week of 12 men connected to a notorious gang-rape case, including six convicted of the crime, court officials said.
The men, detained in connection with the 2002 rape of Mukhataran Mai, were ordered to be freed by the high court in the central province of Punjab, officials of the court said.
Authorities had petitioned a review board of the court to extend the detention of the 12, which expires next Monday, but the court rejected the plea, the officials said.
It was the latest twist in a case that provoked an outcry in Pakistan and focused international attention on the treatment of women in the country, particularly in rural areas, where sometimes brutal tribal customs hold sway.
The original trial before an anti-terrorism court in 2002 found that Mai was gang-raped on the orders of a traditional village council after her brother -- who was 12 at the time -- was judged to have offended the honor of a powerful clan by befriending a woman from their tribe.
Six men were originally convicted of the crime and sentenced to death, but five were later acquitted on appeal to the Punjab provincial court, which cited a lack of evidence. A sixth man had his death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
The provincial government subsequently intervened and ordered that the men be detained for three months pending the outcome of an appeal by the victim against the acquittal. Six men who served on the village council were detained at the same time.
"The review board has held that there is no justification for the detention of these people and has ordered their release after depositing surety bonds of 50,000 rupees ($840) from each of them," Malik Saleem, a lawyer for the 12 men, told Reuters.
Punjab Law Minister Raja Basharat declined to comment on the decision.
Mai expressed fears for her life after the provincial high court announced the acquittals in March.
Gang rapes and honor killings are common in feudalistic rural Pakistan. In most cases the perpetrators go free because of incompetent police investigations and flaws in the legal system, which have been highlighted in the current case.
President Pervez Musharraf, who has been trying to project Pakistan as a moderate and progressive Muslim nation, has taken a personal interest in the case, saying it was tarnishing the country's image overseas.
Well i think the whole scenario is soo sickening.. worst thing is Mukhtaran bibi's name has been put on the ECL( exit control list) so she may not leave the country for USA ...cause THEY think she may try to degrade Pakistan's name while talking to the press there..(and what exactly are they doing!!)
Even when she said she's afraid for her life in Pakistan...
The thing is what can we do about it...nothing i guess sitting far away from homeland all we can do is show our disgust or dismay by writing our veiws about it and feel bad thats it!!
You are right that this whole story is sickening and shamefull for the whole nation.
This is Pak-stan? land of Pak, land of Pure???
I know I should not blame the nation, or the country, or the government for the act of few.
BUT... who are we kidding?? Is it the act of few?? Is it something that happens once in a blue moon? Is it something out-of-the-ordinary ??
No It Is Not !!!
The country has a history of such sickening and shamefull practices. Honor killing, Jaahil Tribunal, Panchaiyaten, Jirga System, Baradari system... these above-the-law, in some cases supported by the black sheeps of our society and sometimes supported by old-aged, full of legal and ethical loop holes of our constitutional practices... have caused the whole country to be embarrased and disgusted infront of the world.
It is an Islamic country right????? right???? then how did they get away ??
Legal loop holes??? support of black sheeps in government??? lack of police efficiency and law enforcement???? or our (the citizens of Pakistan) ignorance ????
In a TV Talk show Ms Nelofar Bakhtiar, the head of the Women's Welfare Ministry, replied to the host's question ...
"Why government is not doing anything is Mukhtaran Mai's case and why is her name on ECL?"
as following:
"Who said we are not doing anything?? We removed her from the ECL.. right?? seeee her name is not there. The prime minitser personally intervened and had the name removed... so now she can go anywhere she wants."
When asked... "but why was her name in the list at the first place" she replied....
"I dont know but that is not the case anymore.. now she is free to go anywhere"
and then, like every other government's trumpet she continued....
"Who said we (the government) are not not doing anything about this case??? Let me tell you what we did.... we have now provided electricity to her (the victim) village, we are making roads in her village, we are making hospitals and shcool is her village"
We are proud, strong, passionate Muslims. We go abroad to assist others in acheiving their freedom against their enemies. We fight in Kashmir, in Palestine, in Iraq, in Afghanistan.... leaving our sister's back home for this???
What are these Muslim Leaders doing now? Who exploits our believes and anger to make us go and do Jihad... what do they have to say about this??? Shouldn't we first clean our own backyard from these criminals and offenders and then think about whats happening elsewhere in the world.
A very young boy once came to Prophet (PBUH) and asked His permission to join the jihad... leaving his old parents behind.
Prophet (PBUH) replied... your Jihad is to protect and provide your old parents first.
I personally beleive that it is OUR, the citizens and nationals of Pakistan, fault. We are ignorant. We don't take action (if any) until our own gets in trouble. We try to hide our trash under the rugs. We are divided in faith, class, sects, culture, language and nationalities. Other's (including our own leaders) take advantage of our differences and rule us.
Mukhtaran Mai is just another news for us.
There are thousands of Mukhtaran Mai victimized every year.
There are thousands of them who don't live to tell their stories to the rest of us.
There are thousands of them who are killed by thier own Fathers, Brothers, Husbands in the Un-Islamic, In-Humane, stupid and disgusting practice called "Honor Killing" in our own backyard, in our own neighbor, cities, towns and villages.
We are Pak-stan, land of the pure???
Can a person be pure with one hand washed but the other in filth???
Then how can we, the nation, be pure if among us we have filth???
Turning a blind eye on the filth of one hand will leave you unPure.
Turning a blind eye on the filth of the nation will leave it unPakistan !!
That is what we are right now... unPakistan !!!
feel bad?? instead of being mad at me... clean the filth !!! together, let us clean the filth of the nation and claim our title... Pak-stan.. land of Pure.
Pakistan Zindabad !!
I invite your feedback, your views, your critisicm, your valued suggestions and advice in the name of a Pure-Land, the PAKISTAN.
Pakistan president (Mr. Parvez Musgarraf) says he imposed travel ban on the rape victim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AP (Associated Press) Friday June 17, 8:33 PM
Pakistan President Gen. Pervez Musharraf said Friday that he ordered a travel ban on the victim of a village council-ordered gang rape to protect Pakistan's image abroad.
Musharraf said Mukhtar Mai, whose rape was ordered to punish her family for her brother's alleged affair with a woman from another family, was being taken to the United States by foreign nongovernment organizations "to bad-mouth Pakistan" over the "terrible state" of the nation's women.
He said NGOs are "Westernized fringe elements" which "are as bad as the Islamic extremists."
Musharraf acknowledged to placing the 36-year-old on the list of people banned from leaving Pakistan while responding to media questions during a three-day visit to New Zealand.
"She was told not to go" to the United States to appear on media there to tell her story, Musharraf told the Auckland Foreign Correspondents' Club.
Musharraf said atrocities are perpetrated daily against women in developing nations round the world _ "in Kashmir and many other places."
"I don't want to project the bad image of Pakistan," he told the journalists' club.
"I am a realist. Public relations is the most important thing in the world," he said, adding that media misperceptions would discourage tourists from traveling to Pakistan.
"Pakistan is the victim of poor perceptions. The reality is very different," Musharraf said.
He defended his regime's treatment of women, saying it was working for their emancipation
Rape was not "a rampant malaise Pakistan suffers from every day," he said.

Was this expected from Gen. Pervaiz Musharraf ??
Was it the right thing to do ??
Does his explanation justifies the ban on travel ??
Isn't this called... slipping the trash under the rug ??
A person becomes so obsessed in getting "a good name", "a good image" that he starts silencing voices against him or his goals ??
Isn't this called ... My way or the highway ??
"Rape was not a rampant malaise Pakistan suffers from every day!".. huh??
Your views, and feedback is highly requested and appreciated !!
FIRST OF ALL. YOUR WEB SITE IS GREAT.
SECONDLY, TAKE ME AS A NEUTRAL PERSON, MEANING I AM NOT FROM PAKISTAN... ( ITS MY HUBBY )... I DIDNT KNOW MUCH ABOUT UR COUNTRY TILL I GOT MARRIED WITH MY HABIBI. AND THEN THE JOURNEY TO KNOW PAK-LAND AND PAK-LANDI BEGAN.....
I M GLAD TO SAY ...PPL OF PAK-LAND ARE GREAT.... JUST FEW ROTTON EGGS CAN'T DESTROY THE IMAGE OF A GREAT NATION.
THEREFOR, IF I WAS IN MR. MUSSARAF'S SHOES, I WOULD HAVE DONE EXECTLY THE SAME....PLUS A LITTLE MORE...
MY FIRST STEP WOULD HAVE BEEN EXECTLY SAME... THAT IS ... THIS LADY HAVE TO STAY IN THE COUNTRY AND HAS TO GO NOWHERE TILL JUSTICE IS DONE
MY NEXT STEP WOULD HAVE BEEN .... PPL OF THAT VILLAGE JUSTICE DEPT., PLUS THOSE EVIL MEN SHOULD HAVE BEEN PUT ON THE SAME LIST SO NONE CAN LEAVE THE COUNTRY.
NEXT STEP.... BRING ALL IN THE SAME COURT ROOM, THIS LADY SHOULD BE GIVEN THE GUN IN HER HAND AND ASK HER TO SHOOT THESE MEN IN FRONT OF EVERY ONE. AND THEN PUT FLAMES TO THEIR DEAD BODIES. THEY DONT EVEN DESERVE TO BE BURRIED.
THIS IS SO SICKENING THAT THEY THINK THAT A 12 YR OLD BOY COULD BE A BAD PERSON, KILL THOSE JUDGES WHO THOUGHT THAT WAY.
IT MEANS THAT THEY ALREADY KEPT AN EYE ON THIS LADY AND WERE FINDING EXCUSES TO GRAB HER WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
THE LADY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY TILL SHE SEES THE JUSTICE. POLICE PROTECTION IS TO BE PROVIDED HER.
I THINK SO THAT PAK-LAND, BEING A MUSLIM NATION SHOULD APPLY LAWS AS PER ISLAM. HERE, IN SAUDI ARABIA, PUNISHMENT OF A MURDER OR A CRIME AS THIS....IS DEATH PANELTY. FIRST CRIME LIKE THIS SHOULD BE THE LAST ONE FOR THEM.
THE GOVERNMENT OF PAK-LAND SHOULD IMPOSE THIS LAW IMMIDIATELY AND IMPLIMENT IT.
THE WHOLE WORLD IS WATCHING EVERY MOVE THAT IS BEING MADE REGARDING THIS CASE.
YALLAH, MR. PRESIDENT, IT IS YOUR TURN TO SHOW WHAT IS "JUSTICE IN ISLAM" TO THE WHOLE WORLD.
THIRDLY, FOR HEAVEN SAKE, LET UR PREIDENT BREATH TOO. DONT JUST JUMP TO CONCLUSION JUST LIKE THAT.... GIVE HIM TIME TO DEAL WITH THE SITUATION, AND TRUST ME I HAVE BEEN WASHING YOUR PRESIDENT RECENTLY, VERY CLOSELY. AND HE HAS PROVED THAT HE IS THE BEST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPEN TO PAK-LAND AT THIS VERY MOMENT.... YOU NAME ME ONE PERSON WHO HAVE HELPED UR PAK-LAND SO MUCH.... US FORGAVE SO MUCH OF DEBT TO PAK-LAND COZ' OF HIM. HE IS NOT A U.S AGENT AS SOME PPL THINK. WHY CAN'T YOU SEE THAT ACHIEVEMENTS THAT US, BEING NON PAK-LANDI CAN SEE?????
AFTER 50 YRS OF BEING RIVALS, SUDDENLY, PAK-LAND AND INDIA R FRIENDS. AND THAT IS NOT A SMALL ACHIEVEMENT. OTHERWISE ALL PAK-LAND & INDIA WAS DOING BEFORE HIM WAS KEEPING LARGE CHUNK OF THEIR ARMY/ MILITARY ON THE BOARDRS. DONT YOU SEE THESE ACHIEVEMENTS????????????????
GIVE HIM TIME AND OBSERVE.... AND TRUST ME, YOU WILL BE GLAD UPON HIS DECISIONS. WE THINK ON SHORT TERM BASIS.... POLITITIONS THINK ON A LONG RUN BASIS... TRUST ME HE TOOK A GOOD DECISION TO KEEP HER IN THE COUNTRY. IF HE WOULD HAVE ALLOWED HER TO LEAVE, AND LET HER BE COUGHT BY THE HEAT OF THE MEDIA AND SPECIALLY WESTERN WORLD..... AND TRUST ME THE WASTERN ARE LOOKING FOR CHANCES LIKE THIS TO PROVE THE WORLD TAHT HOW INJUSTICE IS OUR RELIGION... BUT IT ISN'T...... BEING MUSLIM... I BELIEVE THAT U ALL KNOW ABOUT "HAVE PATIENCE, AND GOD WILL BE WITH YOU".
U PAK-LANDI R LUCKY TO HAVE A GREAT LEADER LIKE HIM.... THIS GUY OF URS IS A GREAT CALCULATOR. HE WATCHES, OBSERVES, CALCULATES AND THEY THROW HIS CARDS ON THE FACE OF THE OTHER PERSON.
FORGET THESE SICKENING MULLAHS, AND THEIR SICKENING TEACHINGS.... IT IS THE TWISTED VERSION OF ISLAM..... AND COZ' OF THEM... THE REST OF MUSLIMS ARE SUFFERING SO BADLY. THEY R DANGEROUS PPL TO BE WITH. THEY TWIST THE RELIGION FOR THEIR OWN INTEREST.... MAY GOD BURN THEM IN HELL .
WE HAVE A JOB TO DO.... BEING MUSLIMS, WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR RELIGION AND OUR IDENTITY. AND YOUR GREAT GUY JUCT SAVED UR IDENTIY BEFORE THE U,S COULD TARNISH IT BY LETTING HER STAY IN THE COUNTRY. ASK URSELF THIS QUESTION, HONESTLY,....
DID'NT YOU HEART BLEED ON THE MISFORTUNE OF THIS POOR LADY. IT DID, DID'NT IT. I AM SURE, IT WOULD HAVE MADE UR GUY CRY TOO. LET HIM TAKE TIME AND TIME WILL LET U PPL KNOW THAT RIGHT DECISIONS WERE MADE AT THE RIGHT TIME.
IT THE WORLD HAD A BUNCH OF MORE OF MR. MUSHARAF. TRUST ME, PAK-LAND WOULD HAVE BEEN ON TOP OF U.S NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.
WATCH AND OBSERVE THIS GUY, AND U WILL BE GLAD THAT U DID...... GUESS WHAT? PERHAPS ..I AM BEGINING TO LIKE UR LEADER! TRY TO OBSERVE WHAT GOOD THINGS HE IS DOING 4 UR LAND. DONT SEE THE NEGATIVE POINTS AND SHADOWS, TRY TO OBSERVE HIS POSITIVE AND BRIGHT SIDE.
SO FAR; HE IS THE BEST THING THAT HAVE HAPPENED TO U PPL.
HE IS GETTING RID OF ALL THE HIDDEN TERRORIST FROM THE LAND WHO DON'T EVEN BELONG THERE. QUESTION... WHY DONT THESE TERRORIST GO AND DO THIS IN THEI OWN COUNRTIES... ANSWER... COZ' THEY KNOW THAT ALL ARAB STATES R MUSLIM STATES AND THEY FOLLOW THE ISLAMIC RULES... THEY KNOW THAT THEIR GOVT. WILL CATCH THEM COZ' ALL IS SO UN-ISLAMIC....SO WHERE DO THEY GO.... UR PAK-LAND... ( DON'T MIND.. PLZ.. WHAT I AM ABOUT TO RIGHT NOW )...ILLITRACY IS A BIT COMMON IS UR COUNTRY AND OUR DESI BROS & SIS. REALLY BELIEVE THAT COZ' THEY R COMING FROM ARAB STATES... SO THEY KNOW ISLAM BETTER THAN US, AND START TO HELP THEM.

Pakistan holds rape victim's passport
Tue Jun 21, 6:03 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pakistani government, which last week said gang-rape victim Mukhtaran Mai was free to travel, has taken away her passport, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.
"Pakistani officials do have her passport," said a State Department official who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of U.S.-Pakistani relations. "We're telling them she needs to be free to travel ... We're trying to get at the basic issue here."
Mai had demanded the government allow her to travel after a court ordered the release of 12 men connected with her case.
The State Department last week called the restrictions "outrageous" following the order to release the men, some of whom were accused of raping her, and it said she was welcome to visit the United States.

It is really appreciated when a person shares his/her honest opinion without taking sides. Beleive it or not, but I am doing the exact same thing. I am not taking anyone's side (nor I should, being the admin). I am just pointing out the updates and adding my personal opinions.

House arrest ???
The criminals are out, and the victim should be contained ???
In a country like Pakistan who is going to stop 12 men from killing a woman ?? Who's life is in more danger ??? The moment the criminals were ordered to be released.. the first thing comes in anyone's mind..."She is dead !!"... That is how it is in Pakistan.
Justice ?? Rape hapenned in 2002, men sentenced to death, and June 10 2005.. they are realeased !! Is this the Justice we are talking about ??
Cases drag in courts for years. Team of sensless, money-hungry, dead-hearted lawyers run and appeal the cases for years. Ofcourse with the support of black sheeps in government, authorities and society.
I am wondering who are these lawyers who actually appealed and achieved the release ?? Don't they have mother, sisters and daughters ???
I agree that the international media can exploit the issue, enemies can use it against us and it can become a bad name for Pakistan.
IF ONLY... Musharraf have called her personally and told her that, please do not leave country becuase of so and so reason. Please come and live where I am, so you are as protected as I am. And Guarantee her the justice.
INSTEAD... she came to know about her name in ECL ONLY after she arrived at the airport. That is sneaky. That is wrong. That is a cover up. As if Musharraf/Government is scared of some secrets she might reveal.
The president puts her on ECL, the prime minister takes her out. The government now holds her passport.
SOMETHING FISHY !! Isn't it ???

They couldn't hold them in jail, how will they hold them in country???
Its easy to hold a rape victim, 33 yrs old il-literate village lady but not people who have support by black sheeps of government, authorities, and society. Our police is so efficient in killing any 12 innocent people, disfigure their faces and claim the 12 rape criminals are dead. While the real ones will be sitting in Dubai, London or USA.

Real world is not that perfect. You cannot just shoot them in a line-up. Therefore, you cannot expect everything will go exactly as you want, exactly as it is "suppose" to.
Il-literacy !! Il-literacy !! Il-literacy !! Thats all I have left to say about the rural areas and their tribal system. The saddest part is that even the well educated ones, doctors, engineers living abraod for tens of years still beleive, follow and honor these stone-age, illiterate tribunal systems, Panchaiyat and Bradari system.

Laws are there, but so are laws to appeal such laws. The men were sentenced to death in 2002. And now they are free, but again they are in custody until the next court ruling.

I did not expect him to do what he did. No doubt he is the best thing happened to Pakistan in history of Pakistani government, acheivements and moderation. But it seems like he is becoming so obsessed of his good name that he will silence any voice against him or his government even if it is a rape victim of Pakistan. He is doing good for Pakistan but that doesn't mean we, the Pakistanis, turn a blind eye on him. Do good for Pakistan but not at the cost of Pakistanis.

Time is a luxury we dont have in this issue. He seems to be panicing and taking wrong steps. President orders ECL, prime minister removes it. What is going on????
No doubt President has acheived alot that no past government was ever able to achieve. But still he is a human and we need to keep an eye on everyone.

Silencing the victim, house arrest, slipping the trash under the rug is not the right thing to do.
Government failed to protect her at the first place. This rape should have not happened at the first place.
Then it failed to punish the criminals
Now it is failing to protect, support and satisfy the victim and the rest of the country.
Waiting is not an option. Why can't we have a supreme court session in one day, announce death to these animals.. and hang them in public, show on TV....
SIR,
aa
Are you trying to say that there is no justice in ur country and it is crupted?
THIS IS NOT WHAT I KNOW ABOUT YOUR COUNTRY, BESIDE STOP NAGGING. EVERY COUNTRY ON THIS EARTH IS VERY CRUPTED, BE IT USA, UK, ETC, ETC.
WAIT AND OBSERVE, I KNOW TAHT THIS LADY HAS GONE THOU HELL. JUSTICE WASNT GIVEN TO HER AT ONCE, AND WAS DELAYED...
Quote:
THEY SAY: DELAY THE JUSTICE, DENY THE JUSTICE.
CRIMES HAPPEN EVERYWHERE...EVEN HERE IN SAUD ARABIA,
BUT CRIMINALS ONCE COUGHT CAN'T BE RELEASED TILL THEY GET THE JUSTICE.
THERE IS NOTHING FISHY ABOUT UR GUY PUTTING HER ON ECL AND LATER LETTING HER GO.
DON'T U GET IT, MISTAKE HAVE BEEN CORRECTED... BUT THEY MADE SURE THAT SHE DID'NT LEAVE IMMIDIATELY. COZ HER FRUSTERATION THEN MIGHT HAVE DAMAGED A LOT FOR PAK-LAND.
U SAID:

FIRST THING FIRST, CAN U ANSWER ME AND CLEARIFY, THAT IS THERE A CERTAIN PART OF UR COUNTRY THAT IS NOT RULED BY UR GUY?
I MEAN THAT THIS IS NEWS TO ME.
NONE IS OBSESSED OF GOOD NAME HERE, HE IS JUST TRYING HIS HARD TO ACHIEVE AS MUCH AS HIS NATION CAN DURING HIS ERA.
NONE IS SLIPPING TRASH UNDER THE RUG. PERHAPS HE HAS OTHER PRIORITIES TOO. NO DOUBT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE CALLED HER PERSONALLY AND SHOULD HAVE SPOKEN TO HIM. I REALLY WISH HE WOULD....
TALKING ABOUT TRADITIONS AND BELIEVES... WHAT DO U CALL THOSE ILLITRATES WHO STILL BELIEVE THAT WOMEN DRIVING A CAR IS HARAM? JUST TCOZ' THEIR MOM DID'NT DRIVE SO THEIR LADIES SHOULD'NT TOO. WHY DO THESE SICK MULLAH KEEP ON FORGETTING THAT WOMEN USE TO RIDE HORSES AND CAMELS DURING PROHPET MOMAMMED'S ( PEACE ON HIM ) ERA.
AND GUESS WHAT? HE DID'NT MIND AT THAT TIME, BUT THESE SICKENING EVIL HEAD MULLAH MIND NOW.
THIS MAKES ME LAUGH AND I FEEL LIKE SLAPPING ONE OF THEM AND TELL THOSE ILLITRATES THAT WAKE UP, THIS IS NOT RELIGION BUT A SICKENING TRADITION. BUT STILL WE ARE FOLLOWING THIS TRADITION. I DROVE AS LONG AS I WAS IN USA ANS UK, BUT HERE I CAN'T. THESE SICK PPL THINK THAT DRIVING WILL LET WOMEN MINGLE MORE OFTEN, BUT NONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE INERACTION / MINGLING WHEN PERFORMING UMRAH OR HAJJ. NOW, THIS IS ILLIRACY.
DONT THINGK THAT IT IS ONLY UR COUNTRY WHO NEEDS SERIOUS ATENTION. THE WHOLE WORLD NEEDS IT.
DON'T U HAVE COURT THAT FINISH THE CASE IN A DAY?
ARN'T PPL INTERESTED TO GET THE JUSTICE QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.
FOR HEAVEN SAKE INITIATE IT AND IMPLEMENT IT.
BUT THEN AGAIN SOME ONE SHOULD ADVISE HIM TO GET IT THIS WAY.
TRUST ME COURTS ARE SLOW HERE IN SAUDI ARABIA TOO, BUT NOT CRUPTED AS U MENTIONED.
SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE CHANGED, PPLZ ATTITUDE NEEDS TO BE CHANGE, PRIORITIES NEED TO BE CHANGED TOO.
THE WHOLE PAK-LANDI NEED 2 THINK LIKE THAT, NOT ONLY U?
I WISH, THAT BEING A MUSLIM UMMA, WE BE FAST AND FAIR ABOUT JUSTICE. MAY JUSTICE BE SERVED IMMIDIATELY TO THOSE WHO R IN NEED OF IT. AND MAY THOSE GET THE HEADEST PUNISHMENT WHO DO SUCH A BIG CRIME. AMEEN
